Pennsylvania Convention Center Grand Ballroom Renovation
Civic + Entertainment
SOSH Architects was selected to provide architectural and interior design services for the renovation of the historic Grand Ballroom at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The ballroom, which was once used as a train depot, is situated over the famous Reading Terminal Market. SOSH’s refreshed design begins at the entrances with all-new illuminated entry portals to draw the attention of guests from the lower level pre-function space. Beyond the entries is a transformed ballroom with simplified and modernized details to enhance the function of the room. Updated acoustical elements were incorporated, as well as modernized lighting features to highlight niched areas along the walls and add subtle drama to the atmosphere. Existing wainscoting was replaced with solid material for added durability in the frequently occupied space. Medium toned wood elements and new wall coverings add warmth to the massive ballroom. The overall renovated design highlights and compliments the ballroom’s original large-spanning barrel vault roof structure which remains its most poignant feature.
